A Different Way to Understand Your Health: A Functional Medicine Perspective

When we hear the term functional medicine, it’s common to wonder: What does it really mean? Is it the same as naturopathic medicine? And what can it actually bring to my health?
For me, functional medicine is about connecting the dots and understanding the full story of a person—a way of approaching health from a different perspective.
Beyond a Symptom

Our bodies don’t function as isolated parts. Digestion, hormones, the immune system, metabolism, sleep, stress, and the nervous system are constantly interacting with one another.
That’s why, in addition to asking “How can we improve this symptom?”, we can also explore:
When did it begin?
What was happening around that time?
What other systems may be involved?
What factors could be contributing?
Functional medicine provides a framework to organize this information, recognize patterns, and establish individualized priorities.
Why Functional Medicine?
For me, it’s also personal.
In 2018, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition—an experience that profoundly changed the way I understood health. Living with a chronic condition sparked a desire in me to understand not only what was happening in my body, but also why it was happening and what factors might be influencing it.
Naturopathic medicine gave me a foundation that continues to be central to my practice: seeing the person as a whole, recognizing the connections between body systems, looking for potential underlying contributors, and supporting the body’s natural capacity to heal.
Functional medicine complemented that foundation with something I have found incredibly valuable: a structure for connecting the dots, identifying patterns, and establishing priorities.

What Does This Mean for the Patient?
Many people come to a consultation with years of symptoms, lab results, diagnoses, medications, supplements, and dietary changes.
A functional perspective allows us to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
Depending on the individual, we may explore their health history, nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, movement, environment, medications, supplements, and laboratory results.
It’s not about finding one single “root cause” for everything. It’s about understanding the context in which your symptoms are occurring, identifying factors that may be modifiable, and deciding what needs attention first.
A Language That Builds Bridges
Another reason I value functional medicine is that it has created a shared language among different healthcare professionals.
MDs, DOs, NDs, chiropractors, dentists, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals may have different educational backgrounds, but they can share a way of connecting the dots.
This can help facilitate more collaborative, comprehensive, and, most importantly, patient-centered care.
How Can You Get Started?
You don’t need to start with 20 supplements, an extremely restrictive diet, or an endless list of tests.
You can simply start by getting to know your story.
Pay attention to when your symptoms began and to possible patterns related to your nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, menstrual cycle, movement, or environment. Bring your laboratory results and an updated list of medications and supplements to your appointments.
The goal isn’t to achieve “perfect” health. It’s to better understand your body and make informed, realistic, and sustainable decisions about your health.
Functional Medicine + Naturopathic Medicine
For me, it’s not about choosing one over the other.
Naturopathic medicine is my foundation and philosophy. Functional medicine added a clinical framework that helps me organize the story, connect the dots, and establish priorities.
Together, they remind me of something essential: behind every symptom, lab result, or diagnosis is a whole person.
